“Write Quick”: War and a Woman’s Life in Letters, 1836-1867

I was recently informed that the Bethel Historical Society, of Bethel, Maine, will now be publishing a new edition of  “Write Quick”, a history of the Civil War based on letters, diaries, and documents from the ancestors of Anne Fox Chandonnet, formerly of Dracut, MA, & Roberta Gibson Pevear, of Exeter, NH. The price for the new edition has been reduced to $34.95, and Bethel will print on demand. However, they will print only soft cover. Please see The Bethel Historical Society website for more details, or contact Randall Bennett; director@bethelhistorical.org directly for orders.

  1. I bet this will be an interesting book. I have no connections to the area or people but would still find it fascinating to read.

  2. Hi Lori, I don't have any connections to the people in this book either. However, the people in the book have a Lowell connection, the city that I was born in, and presently live. Basically, the book is about Eliza Bean. Born in Bethel Maine, she was a mill girl who came to Lowell and married a house painter named Henry Foster. Henry served w/ the 26th Massachusetts Infantry, and Eliza's brother, Andrew, who was a school teacher, served with the 5th Maine. The letters, diary and documents trace the life of Eliza from a mill girl in Maine, a young married woman and mother in Lowell, to a war widow, and victim of undiagnosed tuberculosis : )
