Demolished in the 1960's to make way for Urban Renewal, Little Canada is where my ancestors once lived, loved, worked, worshiped, and played. I wish I could have had a chance to walk it's streets and listen to it's voices before they were erased.

Sentimental Sunday (on Monday): A Walking Tour of the Acre

Continuing in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day and Lowell's Irish Cultural Week,  this week, for Sentimental Sunday, I have chosen to share a few photographs I took the other day while on a walk through Lowell's Acre neighborhood. Hosted by David McKean, David is the local Historian/Archivist for St. Patrick's Church, which is located in the Acre.

Our first stop along the way was at "The Worker" sculpture. Located at the corner of Shattuck and Market Streets, this sculpture was created in 1985, by brothers Ivan and Elliot Schwartz. Also known as the Hugh Cummiskey sculpture, Hugh Cummiskey was an Irish immigrant born in county Tyrone. He came to this place, which was to be Lowell, from Charlestown, Massachusetts by invitation from Kirk Boot. In 1822, Hugh, with his gang of 30 Irish laborers, walked all the way here to help widen the canal system.

In an "Irish Catholic Genesis of Lowell" by George F. O'Dwyer, it is written that Hugh Cummiskey died in the Acre, at his home on Adams Street on 12 Dec., 1871. It also goes on to say that there was a write up about Hugh's life published in the "Courier" on 14 Dec., 1871. I have searched the Dec., 1871 (4 pages available at archive.org) edition of the "Courier' and have yet to find it, but it is quoted in an Irish Catholic Genesis of Lowell, so you can read it there..

During the walk we stopped at Cummiskey Alley. Named after Hugh, I am assuming, here's a listing of those who lived at Cummiskey Alley in 1859.

While in the parking lot next to Cummiskey Alley we were standing alongside an old building, which, thanks to Google and Brian, I found out used to house The Cosmopolitian Cafe.  David didn't come right out and tell us what this building once was, all he said is that it was a bar at one time. So when I got home, I asked my "nice Acre boy", Brian. "The Cosmo" (as he called it), used to be a pretty rough place at one time. He compared it to the bar in the movie Star Wars. He said if you wanted to get into a fight, "The Cosmo" was the place to go. Ha ha... Also, I guess... this is the place where Micky Ward got his hands smashed by the cops back in the 80s. Anyway, according Mr. McKean, this building, with it's granite sills and lintels, is representative of the some of the buildings that were present in the "Irish Acre."

On to St. Patrick's Church, this is the church  where my maternal grandmother, Rita Maille nee Moran, was married in 1940. Actually, she was married at the rectory. She also attended St. Patrick's School for Girls. On May 27th, 1940 an article appeared in the Lowell Sun detailing her wedding. It reads:

Lowell-- A pretty marriage was solemnized yesterday afternoon at St. Patrick's parish rectory by Rev. Edwin F. Carney, assistant pastor, when Miss Rita Moran, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Peter Farley [sic], 2 Dutton street, and Mr. Paul Maille, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert Maille, Wheeler road, Dracut, were united in  marriage in the presence of many friends and relatives. Miss Irene Moran, sister of the bride, and Mr. Emile Maille, brother of the bride-groom, were the attendants.
The bride was attired in a gown of white silk taffeta Queen Anne style, with matching accessories. She wore an illusion veil and carried a Bouquet of white bridal roses, sweet peas and lilies of the valley. Her attendant was attired in pink taffeta with blue accessories and carried an old fashioned bouquet.
After the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's parents with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Simoneau, uncle and aunt of the bride, serving as hosts. A reception followed after which Mr. and Mrs. Maille left for a visit to the World's fair. On returning, they will reside in Hudson, N. H., where Mr. Maille holds and important position with the nationally known Jasper Poultry Farms.

I find a photograph of the church of St-Cuthbert de Berthier. This is the church that some of my Maille family ancestors centered their lives around in the 18th and 19th centuries. My cousin, Kevin Maille, recently visited St-Cuthbert and this is what he had to say in an e-mail that was sent to me,

"..I had to get to St. Cuthbert. It was just a short way off the main highway heading toward Trois Riviere and QC. It was also really cool to see the old town. Lots of small homes, but neat as a pin. In the center is the old church. It was huge and still is the center of community . We spoke to a guy mowing the lawn who spoke English and he took us to the parish priest who didn't speak a word of English. We manage to get him to open his records for us. I didn't learn a lot but have some copies from the old church archives. I did learn that Jean Baptiste Maillet died there which mean that the family had been there longer than I thought. JB is Alexander's son who is Pierre's son. All farms...all flat. Beautiful area though. Also, NO Maillet grave stones at the church graveyard. I have no idea why. They said that they would not have had a cemetery at the farm because Catholics didn't do that. I have no idea where Eusebe would be! They may have been to poor for markers."

My g-g-g-grandfather Eusebe Maille was a resident of Lowell Massachusetts in 1880. He went back to St-Cuthbert before 1886 and died there on 17 July 1887 and was buried on the 19th at the cemetery of the parish of St-Cuthbert. I was surprised to find out from Kevin's e-mail that there is no marker in the cemetery for Eusebe. Also, even though Eusebe's sons were settled in Lowell at this time, (but I believe still retaining a home in St-Cuthbert) I have yet to find a death notice published in Lowell in regard to Eusebe's death.

Eusebe's wife, Angelique Chevrette, dies in 1908 in Lowell and sadly is not buried with her husband in St-Cuthbert.

 While browsing flicker this morning I found this picture of the church some of my Robillard ancestors centered their lives around in the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century. Flickr has a blog this option so I thought I would share. The church looks to be in pretty good shape for a church that is 141 years old. My g-g-grandfather, Jerome Robillard's burial record from Ste-Melanie has the abbreviation, inh.cave l'eglise which means inhume dans le caveau de l'eglise and translates to, buried in the basement of the church. According to my current research, Charles and Elisabeth had 13 children.

Sentimental Sunday: Happy Birthday Emelie Robillard

Emelie Robillard is my 3rd great-grand aunt. She was born and baptised on 6 June 1811. Born unto the union of Joseph Robillard (Pierre, Marie Amable Beignet) and Marie Josephe Rivet (Joseph, Marie Madeleine Martin) in St-Sulpice, L'Assomption, . Her god parents were Laurent Robillard and Francoise Robillard.

According to my current research, her parents, Joseph and Marie-Josephe, had 16 children. Emelie was born 15th and named after a sister who had been born the previous year but passed away at the age of one month and a day.  Emelie Robillard married Narcisse Desrosiers (Louis, Marie Genevieve Cusson dit Foubert)  on 20 February 1838 at St-Sulpice.

In 1852 the family of Narcisse and Emelie are found in St-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Berthier county. Emelie is 37 years of age and her husband, 38 and a cultivatuer.. The couple have 6 children, the oldest being a daughter named Emelie. Their neighbor's names seem all too familiar me.

In 1881 I find a  Norcis (Narcisse?) Desrosiers born in 1812 (this fits) living in Lanoraie, and he is widowed. I am not sure if this is Emelie's husband and I have yet to find a burial record for an Emelie Robillard that fits. So if anyone has any further information on the family of Narcisse and Emelie please contact me : ) Also please contact me if you're searching for a Robillard. I have lots of Robillard information that I would love to share and I am willing to do look ups if just so happens that I don't have what or who you are looking for ; D

Sentimental Sunday: Mr. & Mrs. Donat J. Desrosiers

LOWELL--On April 5 at 2 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception church, with Rev. Francis D. Flanagan, OMI, officiating, Donat J. Desrosiers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Desrosiers of 173 High street, took as his bride, Miss Rita B. Robillard, daughter of Mrs. Lillian Robillard of 50 High street.

Mrs. Claire Bealieu was matron of honor for her new sister-in-law, and bridesmaids were Miss Lorraine Fournier, cousin of the bride and Miss Lorraine Desrosiers, another sister of the bridegroom. Roland J. Robillard, the brides brother, was the bestman, while the usher corps included Francis Fournier, her brother, and Edward Desrosiers, brother of the bridegroom.

The bride was lovely in a white brocaded satin gown with sweetheart neckline and bustle back, and her fingertip veil was caught with side clusters of vines of pearls. She carried white roses with streamers. Her matron of honor wore blue, and the bridesmaids were in pink. All bridal attendants carried red roses with fushia ribbons.

At the reception the bride's mother received guests in a pink frock with blue accents, and the bridegroom's mother were powder blue with navy blue touches. They had corsages of spring flowers to highlight their ensembles.

Leaving for a trip to New York, the bride wore a navy suit with pink accessories and a fushia coat. The couple will live at 111 High street. Both are graduates of Lowell schools.

Rita, as far as I know, was also the daughter of Antonio Robillard. Why Antonio is not mentioned as being her father in this article, I do not know. When I first discovered the marriage of Rita's mother, Lillian Fortin, and my great uncle Antonio in 1926, I thought perhaps Lillian died young, because Antonio remarries around 1940. But Lillian Robillard nee Fortin  did not pass away until 1976, so I can only surmise that they must have divorced. Also another peculiar item in this article is the mention that Francis Fournier is Rita's brother.This is obviously  an error as Francois Fournier, was Rita's cousin, son of Francois and Fabiola Robillard, as is Lorraine. Fab and Rita's father, Antonio, were siblings.

LOWELL -- Miss Rita Moran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Farley, 2 Dutton street, was honored guest at a pre-nuptial testimonial held at her home Thursday night in anticipation of her marriage. On May 26 at St. Patrick's church, she is to become the bride of Mr. Paul Maille, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert Maille, Wheeler road, Dracut. Mr. Maille is a graduate of the Sacred Heart school in Nashua, N. H. He attended St. Louis de France school in this city and has an important position in the nationally known Jasper poultry farm. Miss Moran is a graduate of St. Patrick's girls school and attended Lowell High school, being a member of the Tri-Hi club.

Buffet Luncheon

At the testimonial a buffet luncheon was served by Mrs. Joseph Gagnon, Mrs. Blanche Guilmette, Mrs. V. Simoneau, Mrs. Peter Farley, Mrs. Leo Fortin, Mrs. Cuthbert Maille. The guest book was in charge of Mrs. Wallace Scobie. During the evening an entertainment was enjoyed. Riley - Maille Wedding At Sacred Heart

LOWELL -- Miss Patricia R. Maille, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paule E. Maille of 163 Meadowcroft street, became the bride of James E. Riley of 81 Prince street, August 25, at a 10 o'clock nuptial mass at the Sacred Heart church. Rev. Albert Walls, OMI, officiated the ceremony.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor length imported gown of Chantilly lace fashioned with a sabrina neckline, detailed in sequins and seed pearls, a basque bodice and bouffant skirt designed with lace appliqued panels and a back detail of four tiers of lace. A jeweled crown held her fingertip veil of hand rolled silk illusion and she carried a cascade of slephanotis and ivy centered with an orchid.

Miss Gail Maille, sister of the bride, was attired in a shrimp silk over taffeta floor length gown designed with a scoop neckline and basque bodice. Her circular veil was attached with a matching cabbage rose. The bridesmaids, Miss Roberta Maille, sister of the bride and Miss Sharon Sheehan, and Miss Elaine Sheehan, both cousins of the bride were similary gowned in turquoise.

John Boyle was the best. The ushers were Claude Maille, brother of the bride, Dennis Riley, brother of the bridegroom, and Paul Farley, uncle of the bride.

Following a reception at a Pawtucket boulevard restaurant the couple left for a wedding trip to New York City. They will make their home in Dover, Del.

The bride, a graduate of Lowell high school, is a member of the Blessed Virgin sodality of the Sacred heart church.

The bridegroom, a graduate of Lowell high school, is serving with thr U. S. Air Force stationed in Dover, where he is attending IBM school.
