On This Day: The Marriage of Joseph Achille Robillard & Delia Lepine

Joseph Achille Robillard, son of Octavien Robillard & Marie-Louise Naud, married Delia Lepine, daughter of Urgel Lepine and Elisse Beauchin (?), on 1 May, 1919 at the parish church of Ste-Melaine, Joliette County, Quebec. Joseph Achille Robillard was my first cousin 2x removed, and I am working on extracting the text below in order to translate it. I haven't done too many marriage records, so this may take me some time.

Update 3 May 2011: Here is my transcription thus far, a translation will follow once I am finished.

Le premire Mai mil neuf cent dix neuf. Apres le publication d'un ban de mariage faite au prone le notre messe paroissiale entre Achille Robillard, cultivateur, fils majeur de Octavien Robillard, cultivateur, et Marie Louise Naud de cette paroisse d'une part, et Delia Lepine fille majeure de Urgel Lepine, cultivateur, et de Elisse Beauchin (?) de cette paroisse d'autre part. ? la dispene de deux bans a le mariage accordie par Mgr...

Marriage records are so hard for me. I mean, I can always pluck out the important stuff, like dates and names, and I can tell if there's been a dispensation of consanguinity or affinity, but getting the rest right can be quite the challenge. Any help that anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated : )

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard From Sainte-Melanie

Today is not even close to being a "Wordless Wednesday" and I apologize, but I have a story tell..

Louis-Gaspard-Afred Robillard (1866 - 1914)

Brother to my great-grandfather, Joseph-Arthur-Robillard, Louis-Gaspard-Alfred Robillard was born on 15 April, 1866 and baptized the next day at the parish of Ste-Melanie in Joliette co., Quebec. His parents, Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy(2) had 13 children, L-G was born fourth and the first child to survive past infancy. Raised in Ste-Melanie, I can only assume, since his father was an instituteur (teacher) and an agent, that he was highly educated when compared to the standards of the day.

On the sixteenth of April, eighteen hundred and sixty six, we the undersigned priest, have baptized Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard born yesterday of the legitimate marriage of Jerome Robillard, teacher, and Sophie Riberdy, of this parish. Godfather Antoine Alfred Robillard, undersigned; Godmother Marie Henriette Robillard, undersigned. The father has signed.

In 1881, Gaspard is the oldest child in his parent's household, as all of his half siblings from his father's previous marriage had left the home. He is 14 years old and is in school (+1). In 1883, at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 19 days, he marries Marie-Percide Parent (Isidore, Emilie Etu) at the parish of Ste-Melanie. Present at their marriage is, Jerome Robillard, Louis Gaspard;s father; Isidore Parent, the father of Percide; Marie-Louise Parent, Joseph Parent and Desiri Parent, all of whom are siblings of Percide; Louise Leontie Robillard, a sister of L-G and a Henri Benny, relation unknown. Unfortunately, Louis Gaspard and Percide's life together was cut short as Percide dies of causes unknown in 1888. Having not sired any children yet, L-G, an instituteur in Ste-Elisabeth, is determined to have several offspring so he marries Percide's sister, Elizabeth, seven months later.

In 1890, L-G, still an instituteur like his father before him, becomes a father for the first time. However, his first born, Joseph-Jerome-Isidore-Gaspard does not survive infancy. In 1891, L.-G.'s wife, Elisabeth, gives birth a second time to Joseph-Gaspard-Achille in June of that year. The baby is baptised on the 18th and his godparents are Joseph-Edouard Parent, notaire of St-Jerome and his spouse, Honorine Melancon.  It is also around this time that L-G. probably decides to go into the newspaper business. And in 1892 he becomes the editor and proprietor of Le Courrier Canadien: Commerce, Industry Literature et Education. This publication is a journal of sorts that is published in St-Jerome. I have only been able to find one copy of this journal and the copy that I found is the premiere copy, v.1, n1. However, in a Societe canadienne du microfilm inc. publication entitled Journaux du Quebec, Catalogue 2005 it is noted that Le Courrier Canadien (L.-G. Robillard, editeur), St-Jerome, made it's debut on 3 Nov., 1892 and published it's final copy on 17 Nov., 1892 with v.1, n.3, so there must have been three publications of this journal, Le Courrier Canadien.

By 1895, L-G's wife, Elisabeth, has given birth three times, but only baby has Achille survived, and will turn 4 this year. It is also in 1895 that L-G applies to be an inspector of schools, but his application is denied because there are no vacant positions available at the time. Shortly thereafter, in 1896, he becomes the the director and proprietor of  a publication from Montreal entitled La Nouvelle France. How many copies were published? I don't know. And like the previously mentioned publication, Le Courrier Canadien, I have only found one copy of La Nouvelle France and absolutely nothing else to offer me any further insight. Given the information that I do have in regard to L.-G.'s newspaper publishing enterprise, I can only surmise, at this point, that he went into the newspaper business for something other than money.  As I don't assume that the newspapers generated much income.

In 1897, L-G is finally appointed to be an inspector of schools by the Superintendent of Instruction in the Province of Quebec His first annual report on the Roman Catholic Schools, in his assigned district, is submitted to the Superintendent on 28 July, 1897. I hope to feature that report here on my blog at another time. In September of 1897, L.-G. resigns as an Inspector of Schools.

Around 1901, L-G purchases the Montreal publication entitled Le Pionnier, from an Amedee Denault and at this same time he, L-G, is also the president of L'Union Franco-Canadienne, a fraternal life insurance organization. Exactly when he went into the insurance business is not known to me. However, it is during this time he is accused of skimming money from the organization's reserves and with several lawsuits having been filed against him, it is written that he and his family fled Quebec for the United States. And in 1902, Louis Gaspard and his wife, Elizabeth Parent, are found entering the United States through Detroit, Michigan. With two children in tow, a boy and a girl, they move on to Chicago, Illinois.... To Be Continued.

The Marriages of Louis Gaspard Robillard, Ste-Melanie, Joliette, Quebec

My current research goal is to track the children, all 23 of them, of my g-g-grandfather Jerome Robillard (Louis, Genevieve Riberdy). I know I have a big job laid out in front of me, but I am well on my way.

In an attempt to accomplish this goal I sometimes browse the public trees on ancestry.com to see what other people may have for information on Jerome's children. And the keyword here is, browse, as I'm just looking. I do my own research and I don't take from others. Anyway, while browsing through ancestry.com today I came across a family tree which includes my great-grand uncle Gaspard Robillard (Jerome, Sophie Riberdy). Actually, I have two great-grand uncles with the name of Gaspard, Louis Gaspard Alfred who is the one mentioned in this ancestry tree, and Pierre Jerome Gaspard, both born to the same parents. In this tree that I came across, it incorrectly documents the date and place of Gapspard's first marriage to Marie Percide Parent.  I know this because I had researched both Gaspards, Louis Gaspard and Jerome Gaspard, some time ago and at the time of this research there was great confusion in regard to which Gaspard married whom. But I believe I got that mess figured out and you can read about that here. The other Gaspard, Louis Gaspard's brother, Pierre Jerome Gaspard, married Marie Lea 'Delia' Bonin and their family ended up settling in Rensselaer & Albany counties in New York. So, back to the tree on ancestry. In an attempt to correct the aforementioned tree on ancestry, I have contacted the owner of the tree and I am posting the marriage record of Louis Gaspard Robillard and Marie Percide Parent in order to aid in that the correction.

Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard was born 15 April 1866 and baptised the next day at the parish of Ste-Melanie in Joliette county Quebec. A son of Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy, he was one of 23 (15th) children born to his father Jerome and his 2 wives. Louis Gaspard married Marie Percide Parent (Isidore, Emelie Etu) on 3 April 1883 at the parish of Ste-Melanie, Joliette county, Quebec. Click the image below to enlarge. If we take a look at the acte in the image below you will see that Jerome Robillard, Louis Gaspard's father; Leontine, L. Gaspard's sister; L.Gaspard, himself;  his wife, Marie Percide; and some others, whom were present, all signed.

However, and unfortunately, Louis Gaspard's bride, Marie Percide, dies sometime between 1883 and 1889. I know this as I have found a marriage for Louis Gaspard and his sister-in-law, Elisa Parent.. Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard and Elisa Parent were married 29 April 1889 at the parish of Ste-Melanie, Joliette co., Quebec.

If we take a look at this acte in the image above you will see that there is a bans of dispensation in the first degree for affinity. Gaspard, an instituteur (a teacher, like his father), is also the widower of Percide Parent. Those present are Jean-Baptiste Brisset dit Courshaine, brother-in-law of the wife, and Isidore Parent, brother of the wife, all of whom did not sign.

On This Day: The Birth of Marie Elizabeth Delima Charron dit Ducharme

Using TMG's companion utility product On This Day I am able to take a look into my database on any given day and see the events that occurred.

On this day in 1872 Marie-Elizabeth-Delima Charron dit Ducharme was born. She was baptized at the parish church of St-Felix-de-Valois on 10 July, 1872. The daughter of Georges Charron dit Ducharme and Henriette Robillard. Her godfather was Alfred Antoine Robillard, son of Louis Robillard of Ste-Melanie and her godmother was Elise Lesiege, daughter of  Isac (sp?) Lesiege also of Ste-Melanie.

Henriette and Marie Elizabeth Delima's godfather, Alfred Antoine, were siblings. Their parents, Louis and Genevieve Riberdy dit Sansoucy, were married 4 August 1823 at the parish of Ste-Elisabeth in Joliette county, Quebec. Louis and Genevieve are my paternal g-g-g-grandparents.

Browsing through Drouin Ste-Melanie in, what I thought was, 1863... But when I couldn't find what I knew should have been there I noticed I was looking 1864. It's been a while since I have browsed Ste-Melanie and I don't remember it being messed up like this before but I think it must have been and I just want to note that the spine date matches each individual entry date so it is an ancestry error. Sentimental Sunday: Happy Birthday Emelie Robillard

Emelie Robillard is my 3rd great-grand aunt. She was born and baptised on 6 June 1811. Born unto the union of Joseph Robillard (Pierre, Marie Amable Beignet) and Marie Josephe Rivet (Joseph, Marie Madeleine Martin) in St-Sulpice, L'Assomption, . Her god parents were Laurent Robillard and Francoise Robillard.

According to my current research, her parents, Joseph and Marie-Josephe, had 16 children. Emelie was born 15th and named after a sister who had been born the previous year but passed away at the age of one month and a day.  Emelie Robillard married Narcisse Desrosiers (Louis, Marie Genevieve Cusson dit Foubert)  on 20 February 1838 at St-Sulpice.

In 1852 the family of Narcisse and Emelie are found in St-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Berthier county. Emelie is 37 years of age and her husband, 38 and a cultivatuer.. The couple have 6 children, the oldest being a daughter named Emelie. Their neighbor's names seem all too familiar me.

In 1881 I find a  Norcis (Narcisse?) Desrosiers born in 1812 (this fits) living in Lanoraie, and he is widowed. I am not sure if this is Emelie's husband and I have yet to find a burial record for an Emelie Robillard that fits. So if anyone has any further information on the family of Narcisse and Emelie please contact me : ) Also please contact me if you're searching for a Robillard. I have lots of Robillard information that I would love to share and I am willing to do look ups if just so happens that I don't have what or who you are looking for ; D

The Burial of Eusebe Maille, 1887, St-Cuthbert, Berthier, Quebec

This is a follow up to an older post made back in 2008 in regard to Angelique Cheverette and Eusebe Maille. In May of 2009 I found Eusebe's burial record. He died 17 July 1887 and was buried on the 19th at the cemetery of the parish of St-Cuthbert, Berhier, Quebec. Please click the image below to view a copy of the original record. Back in 08 when I wrote the intial blog referenced above there was some controversy surrounding the marriage(s) of Angelique and her maternal parentage. While this record doesn't clear up the parentage issue, I do believe it certainly clears up the marriage issue. It is my belief that Angelique only married one time, to Eusebe Maille, despite what has been published on a certain Chevrette website.

Tombstone Tuesday: Joseph Albert and Athala Caron, Cimetière Saint-Joseph, Chelmsford, Massachusetts

Buried here is Joseph Albert and his wife, Athala Caron.  Baptized at the parish of  St-Eloi, Riviere-du-Loop, Quebec on the 26th of February, 1869,  Joseph was the son of Felix Albert (Fermin, Celeste Bergeron dit Damboise) and Marie Desneiges Michaud (Alexandre, Zoe Pelletier). Athala, Joseph's wife, was born, according to the headstone, in 1864. However, I can only find one baptismal record for an Athala Caron and that is in 1861 at St-Jean-Port-Joli, L'Islet, Quebec. The father of the aforementioned Athala is documented as being Moise Caron and the mother is Apolline, I can not read the mother's surname.

Below is the baptismal record for Joseph Albert from the parish of St-Eloi, Riviere-du-Loop. According to this record he was born le vingt duex ? (22)  du meme mois (of this month).

Joseph Albert and Athala Caron were married 17 Aug 1891, in Lowell, Massachusetts in a ceremony performed by Rev. A. Amyot. (click the image to enlarge)

In the record cited above, Athala's mother is only recorded as being Apolline.

On 23 June 1900 the family of Joseph Albert was enumerated in the 12trh census of the United States, living at Jodoin Place in Lowell, Massachusetts. Joseph, the head, is recorded as being born in Feb of 1868. He is 31 years old and, according to the census, has been married for 9 years. He was born in Canada-French (Quebec) as were both his parents. The year of his immigration to the United States is 1881, he has been here for 19 years. He is an alien immigrant and his profession is that of an Undertaker with zero months not employed. Also, according to the census, he can neither read nor write, but he can speak English. Joseph Albert rents his home.

Athala, Joseph's wife, is enumerated as being Athela. according to the census, she was born Nov. 1864. She is married and has been for 9 years, four children out of five births are living and she too was born in Canada-French, as were her parents. Her year of immigration is 1883 and she has been in the United States for 17 years. The status of her citizenship is blank, she can read and write and speak English.

The children of Joseph and Athala are recorded on the census as follows:

There is also a Pierre Caron living with the family, he is enumerated as being Joseph's brother-in-law. Recorded as being born in February of 1864, if Pierre is Athala's brother this date certainly conflicts with her  given birth date, doesn't it? I believe the census records Pierre as being widowed, he was born Canada-French, as were both his parents. His year of immigration is 1883, he has been in the united States for 17 years, he's an alien and his occupation is that of a Hostler (?). He can read, write and speak English.

In 1910 the couple, Joseph and Athala, are living on Cheever st. in Lowell. There are two more daughters, Dorila, age 7 and Claire, age 4. According to the census, Athala has now given birth eleven times but only 6 children are living. Joseph is still an undertaker, but now he owns his own shop and is also an employer.

In 1920 Joseph Albert is living with three of his daughters, Dorila, Claire, Maria F, a son-in-law, Edward J. Lynch, who is Maria's husband, and a maid. Athala, Joseph's wife, died in 1918 and Joseph will die on 27 September 1930. Please click the link above to read Athala's obituary. I am still searching for Joseph's.

In 1930 Joseph's son, Joseph Jr, is recorded in the 1930 census, on April 2nd of that year, living at 476 Merrimack st., he is recorded as being 32 years old. His wife, recorded as Florina, is 19. Age at first marriage for both of them is their age at which the census was taken. There are no children. Joseph Jr. is noted as being an embalmer in a Funeral parlor. Is Joseph Jr. getting ready to take over his father's business or had he already?

Looking up a Drouin record to confirm the information I had found at BMS2000 for the marriage of  Moise Prud'Homme and Marie Adeline Philomene Desrosiers. I know they were married 8 June 1858 at St-Joseph de Lanoraie in Berthier county Quebec so I input most of that information into an ancestry search and this is how I found them indexed..

Treasure Chest Thursday: The Marriage of Pierre Zotique Chandonnet and Sephora Germain

This week's Treasure Chest Thursday features a photograph of Pierre Zotique Chandonnet (Charles, Esther Auger) and his wife Sephora Germain. This photgraph was sent to me by their g-g-g-grand daughter, and my first cousin once removed, Emma Loofbourrow. She sent this to me on Feb. 12th 2008 along with several other photographs of the Chandonnet family.

Pierre Zotique Chandonnet and Sephora Germain were married on September 14th 1875 at the parish of Ste-Emmelie-de-Leclercville, Lotbiniere, Quebec.

The Obituary of Pierre Zotique Chandonnet, Lowell, Massachusetts, 1917

CAPTAIN CHANDONNET PASSES AWAY
Capt. Pierre Zotique Chandonnet, a well known resident of this city died last evening at his home, 50 Endicott street, after an illness of a couple of months, at the age of 76 years and 3 months. Deceased is survived by his wife; four sons, Henri, Charles and Arthur of this city and Edmond of Boston; two daughters, Louisiana and Alice Chandonnet of this city.

Capt. Chandonnet was born in Canada but had been a resident of Lowell for over 50 years. At the age of 21 he entered the employ of the Canadian government on one of its dredgers in the St. Lawrence river and it was about 3 years ago that he retired. Some 15 or 20 years ago he was promoted to the position of captain and was in charge of one the biggest dredgers in the St. Lawrence. Some time after his arrival in this country Capt. Chandonnet became naturalized but despite the fact that he was a citizen of the United States his services were of such vain[?] to the Canadian government, that every year he received a call to the dredger.

Capt. Chandonnet spent about five months in Canada every year, leaving this city in the latter part of April, not to return again until the dredging season was over in the latter part of September. About three years ago he retired and since that time up to a couple of months ago he had devoted most of his time tilling the ground and keeping his home in Endicott street in good condition. The captain was a familiar figure about the streets of Lowell and he counted a host of friends who will be grieved to learn of his death. He was a prominent and fervent attendant of St. Joseph's church and was connected with several church organizations.

This write up appeared twice in the Lowell Sun, once with a picture, and another time with out the picture. I have both copies. I found this article when I was researching the Chandonnets in 2008 for a cousin of mine. I was able to follow this Chandonnet line back to the immigrant ancestor, Charles Chandonnet, (Gaitien, Marguerite Legay). Charles Chandonnet was from the parish of St-Calais, eveche du Mans, France. He was a sergeant with les troupes de ce pays at the time of his marriage. He married Elisabeth Bourget (Pierre, Marie-Jean Viens) at the parish of Notre Dame in Quebec City, Quebec on June 13th 1712. He died on June 27th 1756 and was buried on June 28th 1756 at the cemetery of the parish of Notre Dame, Quebec, Quebec.

Born the 19th of January in 1847 and baptised the same day at the parish of St-Pierre-Les-Becquets. His parents were Charles Chandonnet and Esther Auger. His god parents were Nazire Chandonnet and Esther Auger.

The Baptism and Obituary of L'Abbe Louis Robillard

Born and baptised on 14 Feb., 1887 at Ste-Melanie, Joliette. Louis Joseph Octavien Robillard was the son of Octavien Robillard (Jerome, Sophie Moussin dit Lajoie) and Marie Louise Nault. His godparents were Louis Moussin dit Lajoie and Adeline Riberdy. He attended the Seminare de Joliette from 1901-1908. In 1908 he entered into the Grand Seminarie de Montreal and was ordained on 23 Dec 1911. L'abbe Louis Robillard died on 17 April 1954 at the Hotel Dieu in Montreal and was buried in the crypt of the Cathedrale de Joliette on 21 April 1954.

In my previous post, The Canadian Album: Men of Canada.. I mention Pierre Jerome Gaspard Robillard, younger brother of Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard. Pierre Jerome Gaspard was born 13 Sep 1871 and baptised the 14th at Ste-Melanie, Joliette, Quebec, to Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy.

the groom's name is documented as being Joseph Gaspard. The only other Gaspard (that I have found thus far) born to Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy is Pierre Jerome Gaspard b. 13 Sep 1871 and baptised 14 Sep 1871 at Ste-Melanie d'Aillebout. There is no Jos. Gaspard born unto the union of Jerome and Sophie. It is my belief that Marie Percide Parent's husband is Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard. If it was Jerome Gaspard he would have been 11 years old at the time of this marriage.

The Obituary of Joseph Neree 'Henry' Ferron, 1955, Dracut, Massachusetts

NEREE FERRON
Nerre Ferron, better known as Henry Ferron and husband of Rose-Anna Gauthier Ferron of 483 Nashua road, Dracut, died yesterday at his home. He was born in Canada, the son of Glaude and Anna Rabouin. Ferron removing here at an early age where he resided in Lowell primarily and for the past 42 years in Dracut. Surviving him is his wife; fours sons, Leo, Raymond, Arthur and John, of Dracut; three daughters, Mrs Henry Bartlett, Mrs. Albert Sims and Mrs Francis McCarthy of Dracut; a brother, Joseph Ferron of Lowell; four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Gagnon of Chelmsford, Mrs. Alfred Simoneau and Mrs. Robert Moran of Lowell, and Mrs. Blanche Guilmette of Tulsa Okla: 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

FERRON-Died in Dracut, Feb 25. Neree Ferron better known as Henry Ferron. Friends are invited to call at the Archambault funeral home, 311 Pawtucket street, from 7 to 10 pm today and on Sunday and Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 pm. Funeral Tuesday morning. At 10o'clock at Ste. Mary;s of the Assumption church, Dracut. A solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated and burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Funeral Directors Amedee Archambault & Son in charge.
