L'Etoile Tuesday: Publicite a Les Canadiens-Francais de Lowell Mass

L'Etoile, once a very popular Franco-American newspaper, was published in Lowell, MA from 1886 up until 1957,  it's available for viewing on microfilm at several repositories in the area, including the Pollard Memorial Library in downtown Lowell.

The advertisement for the publication L'Etoile below was published in 1896, on page 88 of Les Canadiens-Francais de Lowell Mass. This book, which I believe celebrates the Franco-American community's presence, and influence within the city of  Lowell at the time, was written and published by Avila Bourbonnière. It is to be noted that in 1898, Avila was an assistant city assessor for ward 5. And, in 1899 he made run for the position of Chairman of the Board of Assessors. However, I believe he lost, because in 1900 he returns to Quebec.

A man of many hats, while Avila was here in Lowell, he was a notary public, as well as the secretary for L'Union Franco-Americaine, and the secretary for the Candadian Cooperative Bank, which was located on Middle St.  He was also a general agent at the Columbia Aid Association of Boston, which was located on Central St. A publisher, and secretary of the Société de Publications, Francaises des Etats-Unis; and the Club Democratique Cando-Americain. The list of everything that he was involved in within this city is quite capacious. I am glad that I decided to research him.  It is to be noted, (yes, I write a lot of notes) that Avila's oldest son, Joseph A. (baptized as Joseph-Pierre-Avila in 1871 ) was quite active within Lowell's Franco-American community as well, and I have tried not to confuse the two men. As far as I can see, the younger Avila, as I call him, was almost always referred to as Joseph A.

Baptized at the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Montreal as Michel-Etienne-Avila Gaudry on 27 Dec., 1847, Avila was the son of Michel Gaudry dit Bourbonnière and Catherine Vinet dit Souligny. Marrying Catherine-Concorde-Cornelie Mignault (Pierre-Emile, Justine-Adelaide Leclerc) on 18 May, 1870 at the the parish of St-David-d'Yamaska, thier marriage was largely attended. Naturalized in Lowell, at the Police Court, on 28 October, 1887, Avila and his wife, Cornelie, as far as I can tell thus far, had 9 children, four of whom were born in Lowell. His last known occupation is that of an assurance inspecteur in 1911. However, in his burial record he referred to as being a publiciste. Avila lived to be 75 years old, and died on 30 Dec., 1922. He was buried on 2 January, 1923 in parish cemetery of Notre-Dame-de-Montreal, and like his marriage, his funeral was equally attended.

On This Day: The Marriage of Joseph Achille Robillard & Delia Lepine

Joseph Achille Robillard, son of Octavien Robillard & Marie-Louise Naud, married Delia Lepine, daughter of Urgel Lepine and Elisse Beauchin (?), on 1 May, 1919 at the parish church of Ste-Melaine, Joliette County, Quebec. Joseph Achille Robillard was my first cousin 2x removed, and I am working on extracting the text below in order to translate it. I haven't done too many marriage records, so this may take me some time.

Update 3 May 2011: Here is my transcription thus far, a translation will follow once I am finished.

Apres le publication d'un ban de mariage faite au prone le notre messe paroissiale entre Achille Robillard, cultivateur, fils majeur de Octavien Robillard, cultivateur, et Marie Louise Naud de cette paroisse d'une part, et Delia Lepine fille majeure de Urgel Lepine, cultivateur, et de Elisse Beauchin (?) de cette paroisse d'autre part. ? la dispene de deux bans a le mariage accordie par Mgr...

Marriage records are so hard for me. I mean, I can always pluck out the important stuff, like dates and names, and I can tell if there's been a dispensation of consanguinity or affinity, but getting the rest right can be quite the challenge. Any help that anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated : )

The Marriages of Louis Gaspard Robillard, Ste-Melanie, Joliette, Quebec

My current research goal is to track the children, all 23 of them, of my g-g-grandfather Jerome Robillard (Louis, Genevieve Riberdy). I know I have a big job laid out in front of me, but I am well on my way.

In an attempt to accomplish this goal I sometimes browse the public trees on ancestry.com to see what other people may have for information on Jerome's children. And the keyword here is, browse, as I'm just looking. I do my own research and I don't take from others. Anyway, while browsing through ancestry.com today I came across a family tree which includes my great-grand uncle Gaspard Robillard (Jerome, Sophie Riberdy). Actually, I have two great-grand uncles with the name of Gaspard, Louis Gaspard Alfred who is the one mentioned in this ancestry tree, and Pierre Jerome Gaspard, both born to the same parents. In this tree that I came across, it incorrectly documents the date and place of Gapspard's first marriage to Marie Percide Parent.  I know this because I had researched both Gaspards, Louis Gaspard and Jerome Gaspard, some time ago and at the time of this research there was great confusion in regard to which Gaspard married whom. But I believe I got that mess figured out and you can read about that here. The other Gaspard, Louis Gaspard's brother, Pierre Jerome Gaspard, married Marie Lea 'Delia' Bonin and their family ended up settling in Rensselaer & Albany counties in New York. So, back to the tree on ancestry. In an attempt to correct the aforementioned tree on ancestry, I have contacted the owner of the tree and I am posting the marriage record of Louis Gaspard Robillard and Marie Percide Parent in order to aid in that the correction.

Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard was born 15 April 1866 and baptised the next day at the parish of Ste-Melanie in Joliette county Quebec. A son of Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy, he was one of 23 (15th) children born to his father Jerome and his 2 wives. Louis Gaspard married Marie Percide Parent (Isidore, Emelie Etu) on 3 April 1883 at the parish of Ste-Melanie, Joliette county, Quebec. Click the image below to enlarge. If we take a look at the acte in the image below you will see that Jerome Robillard, Louis Gaspard's father; Leontine, L. Gaspard's sister; L.Gaspard, himself;  his wife, Marie Percide; and some others, whom were present, all signed.

However, and unfortunately, Louis Gaspard's bride, Marie Percide, dies sometime between 1883 and 1889. I know this as I have found a marriage for Louis Gaspard and his sister-in-law, Elisa Parent.. Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard and Elisa Parent were married 29 April 1889 at the parish of Ste-Melanie, Joliette co., Quebec.

If we take a look at this acte in the image above you will see that there is a bans of dispensation in the first degree for affinity. Gaspard, an instituteur (a teacher, like his father), is also the widower of Percide Parent. Those present are Jean-Baptiste Brisset dit Courshaine, brother-in-law of the wife, and Isidore Parent, brother of the wife, all of whom did not sign.

On this day in 1872 Marie-Elizabeth-Delima Charron dit Ducharme was born. She was baptized at the parish church of St-Felix-de-Valois on 10 July, 1872. The daughter of Georges Charron dit Ducharme and Henriette Robillard. Her godfather was Alfred Antoine Robillard, son of Louis Robillard of Ste-Melanie and her godmother was Elise Lesiege, daughter of  Isac (sp?) Lesiege also of Ste-Melanie.

LOWELL--On April 5 at 2 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception church, with Rev. Francis D. Flanagan, OMI, officiating, Donat J. Desrosiers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Desrosiers of 173 High street, took as his bride, Miss Rita B. Robillard, daughter of Mrs. Lillian Robillard of 50 High street.

Mrs. Claire Bealieu was matron of honor for her new sister-in-law, and bridesmaids were Miss Lorraine Fournier, cousin of the bride and Miss Lorraine Desrosiers, another sister of the bridegroom. Roland J. Robillard, the brides brother, was the bestman, while the usher corps included Francis Fournier, her brother, and Edward Desrosiers, brother of the bridegroom.

The bride was lovely in a white brocaded satin gown with sweetheart neckline and bustle back, and her fingertip veil was caught with side clusters of vines of pearls. She carried white roses with streamers. Her matron of honor wore blue, and the bridesmaids were in pink. All bridal attendants carried red roses with fushia ribbons.

At the reception the bride's mother received guests in a pink frock with blue accents, and the bridegroom's mother were powder blue with navy blue touches. They had corsages of spring flowers to highlight their ensembles.

Leaving for a trip to New York, the bride wore a navy suit with pink accessories and a fushia coat. The couple will live at 111 High street. Both are graduates of Lowell schools.

Rita, as far as I know, was also the daughter of Antonio Robillard. Why Antonio is not mentioned as being her father in this article, I do not know. When I first discovered the marriage of Rita's mother, Lillian Fortin, and my great uncle Antonio in 1926, I thought perhaps Lillian died young, because Antonio remarries around 1940. But Lillian Robillard nee Fortin  did not pass away until 1976, so I can only surmise that they must have divorced. Also another peculiar item in this article is the mention that Francis Fournier is Rita's brother.This is obviously  an error as Francois Fournier, was Rita's cousin, son of Francois and Fabiola Robillard, as is Lorraine. Fab and Rita's father, Antonio, were siblings.

The Marriage of Mr. Theophile Courtois and Miss Victoria Monbleau

Married

Of the June weddings, one that was not mentioned occurred at St. Joseph's church June 29, at which Mr. Theophile Courtois led to the altar Miss Victoria Monbleau.

After the ceremony was performed the newly wedded couple and their relatives returned to the groom's house and partook of an elegant spread that awaited their arrival after which the happiest two of those assembled there went on a wedding tour to the New Hampshire hills stopping at Peterboro. A reception followed at which there was a vast array of presents.

LOWELL -- Miss Rita Moran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Farley, 2 Dutton street, was honored guest at a pre-nuptial testimonial held at her home Thursday night in anticipation of her marriage. On May 26 at St. Patrick's church, she is to become the bride of Mr. Paul Maille, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert Maille, Wheeler road, Dracut. Mr. Maille is a graduate of the Sacred Heart school in Nashua, N. H. He attended St. Louis de France school in this city and has an important position in the nationally known Jasper poultry farm. Miss Moran is a graduate of St. Patrick's girls school and attended Lowell High school, being a member of the Tri-Hi club.

Buffet Luncheon

At the testimonial a buffet luncheon was served by Mrs. Joseph Gagnon, Mrs. Blanche Guilmette, Mrs. V. Simoneau, Mrs. Peter Farley, Mrs. Leo Fortin, Mrs. Cuthbert Maille. The guest book was in charge of Mrs. Wallace Scobie. During the evening an entertainment was enjoyed. Riley - Maille Wedding At Sacred Heart

LOWELL -- Miss Patricia R. Maille, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paule E. Maille of 163 Meadowcroft street, became the bride of James E. Riley of 81 Prince street, August 25, at a 10 o'clock nuptial mass at the Sacred Heart church. Rev. Albert Walls, OMI, officiated the ceremony.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a floor length imported gown of Chantilly lace fashioned with a sabrina neckline, detailed in sequins and seed pearls, a basque bodice and bouffant skirt designed with lace appliqued panels and a back detail of four tiers of lace. A jeweled crown held her fingertip veil of hand rolled silk illusion and she carried a cascade of slephanotis and ivy centered with an orchid.

Miss Gail Maille, sister of the bride, was attired in a shrimp silk over taffeta floor length gown designed with a scoop neckline and basque bodice. Her circular veil was attached with a matching cabbage rose. The bridesmaids, Miss Roberta Maille, sister of the bride and Miss Sharon Sheehan, and Miss Elaine Sheehan, both cousins of the bride were similary gowned in turquoise.

John Boyle was the best. The ushers were Claude Maille, brother of the bride, Dennis Riley, brother of the bridegroom, and Paul Farley, uncle of the bride.

Following a reception at a Pawtucket boulevard restaurant the couple left for a wedding trip to New York City. They will make their home in Dover, Del.

The bride, a graduate of Lowell high school, is a member of the Blessed Virgin sodality of the Sacred heart church.

The bridegroom, a graduate of Lowell high school, is serving with thr U. S. Air Force stationed in Dover, where he is attending IBM school.

MATRIMONIAL

A pretty wedding was solemnized last night when Rev. Fr. Watelle, O. M. I. , united in marriage Mr. Francois Bergeron and Miss Josephine Robillard. The ceremony was performed at 7 o'clock at St. Joseph's rectory. The witnesses were Mr. Cleophas Heroux, the bride's uncle, and Mr. Phillippe Bergeron, the bridegroom's father. The bride wore a charming gown of white silk with silk lace trimmings, and she carried a bouquet of white roses and carnations.

At 8 o'clock a reception was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cleophas Heroux, 23 Decatur street. There were many guests and a fine entertainment program consisting of piano selections and songs was given by Miss Eugenie Heroux, Messrs. Arthur and Zenon Robillard and Alfred Duval and others. Among the guests present were Mrs. Arsene Robillard of Cohoes, N. Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Felix Albert of Pelham, N.H.

Mr. and Mrs. Bergeron, who received many rich and beautiful gifts will make their home at 23 Decatur street.

Interesting I say because Mrs. Arsene Robillard is the sister-in-law to Arthur and Zenon (I haven't traced Arsene's descendants yet) and an Alfred Duval married Zenon's wife, Rosanna Foucher, after he died in 1918. The marriage was short lived.. But I believe this Alfred to be that Alfred. Also I find it interesting that  Mr. and Mrs. Felix Albert were in attendance. I just finished reading the autobiography of Felix Albert a few weeks ago, it's entitled Immigrant Odyssey: A French-Canadian Habitant in New England.

I wonder who Josephine Robillard's parents were, there is no mention of them in this article.

Josephine's parents are Louis Arsene Robillard (Jerome & Sophie Riberdy) & Josephine Albert (Fermin & Genevieve?)  Now I just have to figure out who Genevieve is and how Felix and Fermin are related : )

Tombstone Tuesday: Oscar Robillard, 1898, Lowell, Massachusetts - Where We Connect

During my genealogical research of the Robillard family I found an article that was printed the Lowell Sun on 6 Oct 1898 in regard to an Oscar Robillard whom passed away the previous day. Well, I was at the cemetery today and I believe I found his headstone. In the article it states he is survived by his parents and 3 brothers.

Oscar Robillard, aged 24 years, died today as the result of a bicycle accident which occured about two months ago, when the deceased fell from his wheel, sustaining slight injuries, it was thought, of the groin. After the accident, he walked home and was attended by Dr. Patenaude. Robillard had been about, however, notwithstanding some pain caused by the injusries, but yesterday he was taken to his bed, and died several hours after.

He resides at 1 Old City Hall avenue, with his parents. Nine years ago Robillard came to this city from Canada, in a town of which he was born. He was well-known and highly respected in French circles. Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers.

If you notice in the headline of the article it states that he died yesterday, but in the article it self it states he died today. The headstone is scribed with the date of the 5th, which would have been yesterday..Lol.

On 10 Oct 1898 in The Lowell Sun on pg. 8 there is his report of death..

In this record it states that Oscar's father was married before his marraige to Oscar's mother. So in order to find out who Oscar's father's parents were I had to go looking for that marriage and I found it too at BMS2000. Ambroise Robillard and Louise Bordeleau were married 6 Sep 1864 at St-Ambroise-de-Kildare, Joliette. Ambroise's parent's are Joseph Forgeron (a forgeron is a blacksmith) and Luce Routier. Joseph and Luce Routier were married 31 Jan 1832 at Ste-Elisabeth, Joliette, Joseph's parent's are Raphael and Genevieve Eneau [Henault?]. Raphael Forgeron (blacksmith) Robillard and Geneveive Heneault dit Porneauf married 11 Jan 1808 at Ste-Elisabeth. (all BMS2000) Raphael's parent's are Pierre Robillard and Marie Joly. Pierre and Marie marry on 15 Feb 1768 St-Genevieve, Berthier (BMS2000). Pierre's parents are Pierre Robillard and Marie Angelique Marette dit Lepine Richard (PRDH). They are married in April of 1742 at Lanoraie. Pierre's parents are Pierre Robillard and Catherine Coutu, married 5 Nov 1715 at St-Sulpice (PRDH). And we all know who Pierre's parent's are right? ?? Ah come on... You know! It's Claude Robillard and Marie Grandin. See... you got it, and there is where Oscar's line connects with mine. Right at the very begininng of the earliest Robillard line in Quebec.

Treasure Chest Thursday: The Marriage of Pierre Zotique Chandonnet and Sephora Germain

This week's Treasure Chest Thursday features a photograph of Pierre Zotique Chandonnet (Charles, Esther Auger) and his wife Sephora Germain. This photgraph was sent to me by their g-g-g-grand daughter, and my first cousin once removed, Emma Loofbourrow. She sent this to me on Feb. 12th 2008 along with several other photographs of the Chandonnet family.

Pierre Zotique Chandonnet and Sephora Germain were married on September 14th 1875 at the parish of Ste-Emmelie-de-Leclercville, Lotbiniere, Quebec.

Robillard Raogk - Where We Connect

A couple of weeks ago I started a small project for a fb friend of mine, Leo Cotnoir. Leo's great grandfather was Onesime Robillard and he was curious to find out if my Robillard line and his connected. When he first presented this question, my immediate response was that I was sure our lines crossed somewhere but where. With that being said, I started the research. It didn't take long to find out where we were connected. Once you get to a certain point in the Robillard ancestry everything is easy peasy. So with out further ado here is Leo Cotnoir's Robillard line.

1. Onesime Robillard (George, Emelie Heynemand) was born on 8 August 1862 at Lanoraie. He married Exilda Daigle. [personal knowledge of Leo Cotnoir]

2. George Robillard (Magloire, Marie Rose Gilbert dit Comtois) married Emelie Heynemand (Louis Gonzague, Sophie Marion) 27 Nov 1857 at the parish of St-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Berthier, Quebec

3. Magloire Robillard (Louis, Marie Madeleine Wagner) married Marie Rose Gilbert dit Comtois 27 Jan 1829 at the parish of St-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Berthier, Quebec.

All of the information above, except for Onesime's marriage, was found in the Drouin collection and I have the images, if anyone needs them please contact me.

4. Louis Robillard(Joseph, Marie Charles Charlotte Cochon) married Marie Madeleine Wagner(Georges, M. Angelique Delome) November 11th 1799 at Lanoraie. [Prdh familiy # 36451, couple # 82033]

5. Joseph Robillard (Claude, Marie. Judith Delpe) was born on December 25th 1738 at St-Sulpice. He married Marie Charles Charlotte Cochon(Jacques, Marie Catherine Morissette) on June 16th 1760 at Lavaltrie. [Prdh individu #158767, individu # 158766, couple # 36451]

Here is where Leo's Robillard line meets with mine.

6. Claude Robillard, Leo's ancestor, was the bother of Pierre Robillard, which of whom I descend. Pierre married Marie Amable Beignet (Francois, Marie Anne Brault) on August 8th at St-Sulpice. Claude Robillard, Leo's ancestor, was born on Feb 4th 1714 at St-Sulpice. He married Marie Judith Delpe dit Belair (Jean-Baptiste, Marie Madeleine Menard) on June 26th 1737 at St-Sulpice [Prdh individu # 97863, #97864] Both brothers, Claude and Pierre, were the sons of Joseph Robillard and Marie Marguerite Bazinet dit Tourblanche.

7 .Joseph (8. Claude, Marie Grandin) and Marguerite Bazinet dit Tourblanche (Antoine, Francoise Janot dit La Chapelle) were married on the 20th of April 1711 at the parish of Pointe-aux-Trembles, Ile de Montreal, Present at their marriage were Joseph's father, Claude; his brother, Claude; Joseph Trottier, Francoise Guillain, second spouse of Antoine Bazinet; Joseph Bazinet and Francoise Beauchamp.

Although I have the Drouin image for this marriage it is easier for me to cite Prdh mariage #11566. This information is also available in the Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Canadiennes, Volume 7 1700-1760.

The Wilfrid Albert Family, Lowell, Massachusetts

Son of Isadore and Georgiana..

Isadore and Georgiana Vezina were married 20 Aug 1899 at Lowell, Massachusetts. Isadore's parents are noted as being Edward Albert and Caroline Unknown. Georgiana's parents are documented to be Joseph and Agles Leduc.

I have here my transcriptions of Albert family for the 1910 and 1920 census of Lowell, MA. I also have the 1930 census. However, I did not transcribe it completely. In that particular census Wilfrid is married and living on the Dutton St. front row. He and his family were probably neighbors of my Aunt Victoria Simoneau nee Ferron, she and her sister Blanche ran rooming houses there. Wilfrid Albert's occupation in the 1930 census is that of a laborer in the construction industry. His wife's name is not very legible. It looks like Hermain to me. Both husband and wife are 29 years of age. And both are born in Massachusetts. However, unlike Wilfrid's parents (born in Canada), Hermain's parents were both born in Massachusetts. Wilfrid and Hermain have 4 children at this time; Andrew, age 9; Armand, age 8; Arland, age 4 years and 8 months; and Doris, age years and 5 months.

the groom's name is documented as being Joseph Gaspard. The only other Gaspard (that I have found thus far) born to Jerome Robillard and Sophie Riberdy is Pierre Jerome Gaspard b. 13 Sep 1871 and baptised 14 Sep 1871 at Ste-Melanie d'Aillebout. There is no Jos. Gaspard born unto the union of Jerome and Sophie. It is my belief that Marie Percide Parent's husband is Louis Gaspard Alfred Robillard. If it was Jerome Gaspard he would have been 11 years old at the time of this marriage.
